BOOM!

Yup. If we were to get nuked or suffer an EMP attack, it would happen about that fast. While the FedGov might have some sort of warning, we citizens would likely have no warning whatsoever. With North Korea testing nukes again and launching a bunch of missiles and Iran beating its chest like a gorilla’s warning (not to mention they’re outright telling of how they want to annihilate Israel), I think it’s pretty clear that we’re in a new era of crisis threats. I don’t think we’ve been this close to someone detonating a nuke in anger since the 1980’s.

If you haven’t given much thought to what would happen if we suffered even a single nuclear detonation in this country, let alone several, uh, now might be a good time to start learning about it. An EMP attack is probably even more likely, as you can affect a much larger area with a single detonation.  In fact, while one may do it, two or three would definitely get the job done.

Recently, I finished a new book that was just published in March 2009, called “One Second After,” by William R. Forstchen. To me, this is a fairly accurate look at what were to happen if this country were to be the victim of an EMP attack. In summary, it ain’t pretty. I do recommend the book for a grim, but realistic look at the aftermath of an EMP attack.

We used to say that your first goal is to be able to stay in your house for two to four weeks, without any external help (grocery stores, etc.).  Now, however, considering the type of threats that we’re facing, I have to say that your minimum goal needs to be 3 months, and then move that to 6 months ASAP.

Hopefully, all of these things will blow over and we’ll look back on this period and chuckle, but if not … well, that’s why it’s called being prepared.

A Couple of Things to Keep in Mind

Last weekend I went on a fishing trip to northern New Mexico, courtesy of my work. It was a most excellent time and I got to do some relaxing away from the computer for a bit.  Here’s a snapshot of one of the lakes:

Fishing TripSince I drove up there and it was a 10 hour trip each way, I had a lot of time to think. One of the things that I pondered about was how many potential events that are currently facing us. We’ve covered these in the podcasts and in this blog, so there’s no need to list them again, but the thing that really stood out to me is the lack of coverage that these potential events are getting in the media. Even our federal government has taken the “Everything is fine” position, even on those things that are clearly not fine (like the economy).

Another disturbing facet is all the disinformation that is being put out, especially by people who should know better. I read, listen and sort through an enormous amount of information and I don’t want to name names, as that’s not what I’m about, but there are a couple of things that I want to make sure you are aware of.

First, the Influenza A H1N1, formerly known as Swine Flu, is not a “non-event.” Not to beat up on anyone, but only the ignorant would say something like that when it’s clearly an event that’s going on right now. H1N1/Swine flu is still spreading, even when flu cases should be dropping off, but luckily it still has a low mortality rate (which they fear will change this fall). We’ve covered this in two of our podcasts and if you haven’t listened to them, you need to. It’s about straightest info you’re going to get right now. Don’t be lulled to sleep on this.

The second, and more important thing that you need to keep in mind, is that preparedness is NOT a race. It doesn’t matter that you’re better prepared than your neighbor, or the “next guy.”  If your neighbor has 1 week of food and water and you have 2 weeks of food and water, you are better prepared than he is, but if the event lasts 30 days, neither of you are going to make it.

The novice will often say things like, “I’m better prepared than 90% of everyone else!” or, “At least I’m more prepared than my neighbors!” Unfortunately, dying last counts for nothing. It’s not a race, so don’t look at it like that. You need to make sure that your preparations are going to see you and your family through whatever it is that you’re preparing for. Buying an extra case of Mac and Cheese just isn’t going to cut it.

Pandemic Flu Not Over Yet

Swine flu, or Influenza A (H1N1), is still a concern.  I know that it might not have seem that way if the only place you get your news is from TV/Radio, but it is still a serious and potentially bad situation.  I’m surprised that the WHO hasn’t yet rasied the Pandemic Flu Alert to Level 6, which is the highest and signifies a full global pandemic, as Swine flu is still spreading throughout the globe.

This current Swine Flu turned out to be a very weak strain of flu, at least so far.  While that sounds good, you should keep in mind that, viruses can mutate and though it may start off as weak, it can mutate into a much deadlier strain and wreak havoc on populations.

MAKE NO MISTAKE – it’s not over yet.  Only the ignorant are thinking that this is no big deal.  This strain of Influenza A (H1N1) will be around with us forever, but no one knows what the future strains of it will be.

You should look at this as a dress rehearsal for pandemic flu.  In the last 10 years, we had SARS, Bird flu and now this Swine flu.  SARS and Bird Flu are still potential issues.  SARS is floating out there someplace, and if the bird flu ever mutates to a point where it can be easily transmitted from human to human, that has the potential to be a “slate-wiper.”  And we don’t know how this current flu will end – let’s all hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you realize that this is not over and you should continue preparing for it.  We’ve had the ’shot across the bow’ and it’s up to you to respond appropriately.  Take this time to do the simple and inexpensive things to get prepared.  While supplies may be low now, they will quickly restock as this threat has fallen off the radar of the public’s attention.  Take this time to implement a plan to acquire the proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), especially if you’re on a budget. Do research on Pandemic Flu so you know what the difference is and what to expect.

Don’t be lulled to sleep by the inattention that this is getting. Survival is the Art of Being Prepared.
