BBC News – Call to improve password security

Hopefully, no one reading this blog is foolish enough to use simple passwords.  Even so, if you have a habit of using one password for every website and/or your passwords are simple, you should really rethink your digital security.  Personally, I use 1Password to keep track of all my website passwords, and I use its built-in password generator to create random passwords.  Since it keeps track of them for me, I don’t have to worry about remembering them (it will fill it in automatically for you – yeah, it sounds insecure, but it isn’t). Sites more prone to hacking (like Facebook) get passwords of maximum length and complexity.

BBC News – Call to improve password security

Researchers say the growing number of processors on graphics cards will soon make it trivial for them to crack short passwords.

A password of seven characters or less will soon be “hopelessly inadequate” they claim.

The researchers suggest passwords should be at least 12 characters long to be safe.

Move over games and make room for medicine. A growing number of developers are tapping into a treasure trove of U.S. government healthcare data and coming up with innovative iPhone apps that help consumers make better medical decisions.

Here are three iPhone apps that point towards a future of patients having more medical data at their fingertips…

Earthquake survivor says iPhone helped save his life

Never has it been so easy to carry so much information in your pocket. The key here, though, is to have had the forethought to download the info before you need it. We live in a nearly ‘always-on’ connection to the Internet, but when that link is severed, what you have with you is all you have. Hmm, gee, that sounds a lot like being prepared.

Here’s a remarkable story coming out of the horrendous tragedy in Haiti. Colorado Springs resident Dan Woolley was at a Port-au-Prince hotel when that tremendous earthquake struck, trapping him with a compound fracture in his leg and a laceration on his head. Fortunately for Dan, he had his iPhone and a medical app with him (plus a lot of luck), which he used to successfully diagnose and treat his injuries.

Using the light from his iPhone’s screen, Dan examined his wounds and identified the extent of the damage using the unnamed app. From there, he looked up the appropriate first aid techniques and applie

Quake Live now live for the Mac | Games | Game Room | Macworld

I know this isn’t directly related to preparedness, but honestly, sometimes you have to let off a little steam and have some fun. They just released the Mac version of this, so I decided to give a try. It’s actually pretty cool and I think it will become the main method for game distribution in the future. It plays just like a game you’d install on a disc.

It’s free, so if you’re into gaming, give it a whirl and have some fun.
