Prep 101 message board response
Let me start off by saying that I don’t speak for the group, these are my opinions. So what I say here does not reflect on the group, only me.
Being more fearful of people’s driving habits, should I insist that everyone take the bus to the meeting?
I completely understand what you’re saying about that incident and wouldn’t want a loaded gun pointed at me (who does?), but let’s have a little reality check here. Did anyone who saw this woman act irresponsibly tell her to immediately “STOP! Point the weapon at the ground,” and clear it? Or did everyone just sit there dumbfounded?
There needs to be control because without it, regardless of what the danger is, someone needs to take immediate control of the situation.
See, even if there’s a “rule” against bringing personal weapons to meetings doesn’t mean that people won’t do it anyway. Laws and rules don’t stop it from happening. It’s what other people do in response that is the important thing.
Did you say anything to this woman? Did anyone? Did you leave? Was she asked to leave? Was she asked to surrender her weapon, or told not to come to the meeting armed until she has received the proper training? What she did was not cool, but it’s also not cool to let the situation get out of control.
There is no such thing as accidents, only negligence. Based on your description of the incident, she was clearly negligent in handling the weapon. However, if no one stepped in to stop it, then everyone in the room was also negligent.
On the other hand, I would not be against the host of these meetings telling people that their personal weapons shall remain holstered unless they have specific permission to display their weapon, as that’s a reasonable precaution in order for the host to ensure that she or he can maintain control of the room.
